Police arraign Lagos car dealer over N26m scam
Mr. Oyeniyi Abolaji Muideen, 47, is a car dealer and the director of Bajomo Investment Limited. The Nigeria Police Zone 2 Command in Onikan, Lagos, has detained him and charged him before a Lagos Magistrates' Court for allegedly obtaining N26,000,000 from a widow, Mrs. Hauwa Sunkanmi Bamigboye, through false pretences.
According to the police, the defendant took money from the complainant under the false pretence of giving her cars, but he never delivered on his promise and instead used the money for his own purposes.
The defendant, a resident of El-Shadai Close, Off Itoga Road, Badagry, Lagos, was charged with two counts related to theft and acquiring money under false pretence before the Igbosere Magistrate's Court, which was in session at the Ebute-Metta Magistrate's Court, Lagos.
ASP Ibrahim Haruna, the police prosecutor, informed the court that the defendant had committed the crime in Badagry, Lagos, in May of 2022.
Haruna told the court that the defendant deceived the complainant and obtained N26 million under the false pretence of giving her four cars—a 2007 Toyota Sienna, a Mazda 323 coupe, a Toyota Camry hatchback, and a Ford bus—but in reality, the defendant did not give the complainant the cars and instead used the money for his own purposes.
According to him, the defendant's offences were covered under Sections 287 (a) (b) and 314 (1) (a) (b) of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Law.
But after the defendant entered a not guilty plea, Magistrate Mrs. Davies gave him N1 million in bail, backed by two sureties in the same amount.
Davies postponed the trial until March 21, 2024.
