Police arraign Lagos spare parts dealer for sexual harassment
On Wednesday, the Lagos State Police Command filed charges against businessman Eddy Ebube, also known as Bebex.
The well-known spare parts vendor from Mushin's Ladipo Market was charged before the Samuel Ilori Courthouse in Ogba.
Following the "sexual assault and harassment" of a nursing mother in the Papa Ajao neighbourhood, Bebex was apprehended and arrested.
He was brought before the court with a companion; both were given bail, and the matter was postponed until May 15, 2023.
After the victim recorded her experience and posted it on Twitter, Aare-Ayodeji (@omolisabi1) made a number of postings about the abuse.
The woman claimed that on the day of the event, she had left her infant in the care of another person and gone out to get food to break the Muslim fast.
She remembered Bebex and others calling her names that were derogatory. She was bothered and intimidated when she refused to pay attention.
The defendant and the cops bullied the victims after the incident was reported to the Olosan Police Station, pushing her to record a video in which she apologized.
But Idowu Owohunwa, the commissioner of police, was alerted by Aare-Ayodeji and other people who insisted that the authorities look into the situation.
During a meeting on Tuesday with the woman's family, activists, and others, the CP swore to obtain justice for the nursing mother.
Owohunwa demanded that Bebex be arrested, that DPO Olosan be fired, and that the police Gender Department take over the investigation.
The CP also ordered an investigation into the cops who took money from the victim before arresting the offenders and those who coerced her into making a denial video.
