Police arrest 9 suspects of Abuja cult clash
According to Wilfred Afolabi, the commissioner of police for Ondo, 19 individuals have been taken into custody in relation to the cult conflict in the state's Owo LGA.
The state's governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, enforced a dawn-to-dusk curfew in Owo town on Monday in response to the altercation, which reportedly cost four lives.
Following a visit to the crime scene for an on-the-spot assessment, Afolabi gave a news briefing at police headquarters in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.
He stated that those in detention will be prosecuted and that attempts are being made to capture "other miscreants" connected to the incident. The impacted regions, such as Eyin Ogbe, Iselu, Ijebu Owo, and the palace area, have seen peace return, the police commissioner added.
“So far, 19 suspects have been arrested in connection with the crisis. Investigations are ongoing to determine their level of involvement in the incident,” he said.
“Life is precious, and we will make sure that justice is dispensed over the Owo matter. There is a proliferation of firearms in the hands of people who aren’t supposed to be in possession of them.
“And that’s why we are experiencing clashes here and there. But we will work assiduously to make sure that such people are dispossessed of the firearms so that the state can be made safe and conducive for people to live.”
