Idris Amedu, a Fulani herder who is 25 years old, was detained by Edo State Police Command agents for allegedly taking part in a string of kidnappings in the Niger Delta.

The state command's spokeswoman, Chidi Nwabuzor, who verified the arrest, claimed the suspect, identified as Dogo, was supposedly the leader of an infamous abduction ring that was recently accused of killing some police officers.

He claimed that on September 20, at 10 p.m., Dogo, who had previously been listed as sought by the police, was apprehended in Ahor town outside of Benin City after he came out of a bush carrying a bag reportedly containing properties belonging to one of his victims.

He added, “His arrest followed a reliable intelligence report received by detectives at Egba police station in the Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state.

“Items recovered from the suspect include eight different Automated Teller Machine cards of local and foreign banks; a British residence permit; foreign cards bearing Mr. Afam Ogbu (with the photograph), and Mrs. Ogbu Mary Theresa; passport photographs of a white lady and that of three young black men.

“Also recovered are a company’s staff I.D. card with a photograph and name of Oguejiofor John Uchenna, an ATM card belonging to one Favour Obayuwana, international passports of foreigners, a pair of female wedding rings and necklaces,” he added.

Amedu, who denied being involved in kidnappings, stated that when he was apprehended by police, he was on his way to a local police station to turn over the bag to the officers there.

The PPRO acknowledged the start of the inquiry and said that the suspect would shortly face charges in court.
