Police arrest man for marrying second wife in Lagos
A guy named Edmund Uzoma was charged by the police with bigamy on Wednesday at Yaba Magistrates' Court, Lagos State.
Uzoma was charged with three charges of bigamy and forging information on a marriage certificate before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun.
Idowu Osungbure, the prosecutor, said the court that while Uzoma was married, he entered into a second marriage at a wedding registry with a woman named Sophia Yongxian.
He pointed out that the defendant likewise falsely claimed to be a bachelor even though he was already married.
In 2019, according to Osungbure, Uzoma allegedly committed the crime, which was punishable under sections 411 and 115 of the Lagos State Criminal Laws as well as section 370 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap. C. 38 Laws of the Federation, 2004.
The charges read in part, “That you, Edmund Uzoma, of Lekki Road 15, Golden Gate Apartment, Lagos, on or sometime in 2019 in Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit a felony, to wit; bigamy, and false statement and declaration.â€
The accused entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.
He was granted bail in the amount of N1m with two dependable sureties in the same amount by Magistrate Olatunbosun.
One of the sureties, according to her, must own real estate in Lagos.
The case was postponed until March 15, 2023, by Olatunbosun.
