Police arrest man for raping, killing 80-year-old woman in Ondo

Five days ago, the police in Ondo State detained Mima Chinecherem, 27, on suspicion of kidnapping, raping, and killing Felicia Aderibigbe, an 80-year-old grandmother.

After Mrs. Aderibigbe failed to return from her farm in Ore, Odigbo LGA, she was reported missing on May 17.

The following day, the incident was reported to the Otu police divisional headquarters.

After the community searched for Mrs. Aderibigbe's body for several days, it was later discovered at the edge of her land.

She was widely believed to have been raped before being killed by strangulation.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous reports of old ladies being raped, which has scared women away from visiting their farms unaccompanied.

Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the state's police spokeswoman, said journalists in Akure that Mr. Chinecherem was later detained when a palm frond was discovered planted in front of Mrs. Aderibigbe's residence.

Being a tapper of palm wine, Mr. Chinecherem was connected to the murder.

The old woman's cell phone was found on him after his home was checked.

Mr. Chinecherem said that he picked up the cutlass, bucket, and mask that were found on him at the farm's boundary during questioning at the police headquarters.

He decided to carry the palm frond to their house around 10 p.m. and assured them they would grasp the significance the following day after explaining that it was the deceased children who had cut and dropped it on their mother's farms.

After more inquiries, the suspect would be charged in court, according to Mrs. Odunlami-Omisanya.
