Police arrest sales girl for N3.8m theft in Lagos

Adijat Bello, a saleswoman, was detained by police at the Alade Division of the Lagos State Command, Shomolu, and charged in a Lagos Magistrate's Court.

Her employer, Bashan Global Resources Limited, which is based at 28 Bajulaiye Road in Shomolu, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, accused her of stealing N3,815,000 from them.

Bello was accused of selling goods and keeping the money for herself rather than depositing it into the account of her employer.

The complainant discovered the alleged fraud, according to the police, when it audited its financial records. The complainant then reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in charge of the Shomolu Division in Lagos, who instructed his men, under the direction of Inspector Omini Sunday, to arrest the accused.

The defendant, an inhabitant of Mohegwlu Street in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, was accused of conspiring and stealing on two counts before the Yaba Magistrate's Court.

In the accusation with the charge number C/93/2022, Police Counsel Magaji Haruna informed the court that the offence was committed on November 3, 2022, at 28 Bajulaiye Road in Shomolu, Lagos, by the accused.

The defendant, a salesgirl, sold goods for N3,815,000 that belonged to her employer and converted the money to her use rather than depositing the money into her employer's account, according to Haruna, who briefed the court.

According to him, the defendant was charged with crimes under sections 411 and 287(7) of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.

In response to the defendant's plea of not guilty, Magistrate O.A. Adefope granted her bail and continued the case for mention until December 20, 2022.

In accordance with Adefope's directive, the defendant was to be held at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility in Apapa, Lagos, while she completed the terms of her bail.
