Police arrest two ex-soldiers for armed robbery in Lagos
Police operatives in Lagos have arrested two dismissed soldiers and four others alleged to be members of a notorious armed robbery and car theft gang.
Spokesperson for the police in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, exhibited the suspects and evidence confiscated from them before journalists in Lagos on Tuesday.
The police spokesperson said the two fired soldiers belonged to a robbery group that allegedly specialised in snatching vehicles at gunpoint from motorists in different parts of the state and selling the same within Lagos.
He claimed that the expelled soldiers had stolen at least 13 cars before being apprehended and that they had committed their heist while dressed in full military regalia.
“They carried out their crime wearing full military uniform. Our investigation so far revealed that the gang has snatched a total of 13 cars, two have been recovered. We also recovered the military uniform, and military Identity cards with various ranks, including Lieutenant Colonel,” he said.
He stated that following intelligence gathering and due diligence investigations conducted on them over the course of a month, the robbery suspects were taken into custody by the Surulere-based tactical unit of the Command.
According to the spokesperson, two cars were found seized from them and three of them were detained in Lagos State; one was nabbed in Ilorin.
“They have been operating quite a while before their arrest. They are four in number, two are dismissed soldiers. One was dismissed in 2014 and the other in 2017.
