Police begin investigation as woman attempts to sell her five-year-old child
According to the Rivers State Police Command, a mother is allegedly trying to sell her five-year-old boy in Port Harcourt. The police are looking into the matter.
Our correspondent who went to the alleged crime scene learned that on Saturday, the youngster was taken to a well-known market on Bishop Okoye Street in the Mile 3 neighbourhood of Port Harcourt by a woman named as Onyinye.
But when several traders questioned her and discovered her genuine motivations—which she explained away as hardship—drama broke out.
But the merchants, who didn't think the youngster was really hers, wrapped her up and brought her to the police station to report the incident, which resulted in the woman's detention.
One of the traders said, “The way I see the woman, I don’t think she is normal because of how she was acting.”
Grace Iringe-Koko, a spokesman for the state police command, verified the event when reached on Monday and stated that it is being looked into.
She stated, “The woman was brought to the station by some persons who alleged she came to the market to sell her child.
“We are investigating the matter to ascertain the veracity of the eyewitnesses’ claims. Meanwhile, the woman is still with the police.”
