Police dismiss officer over alleged baby theft
Inspector Samuel Ukpabio's termination has been authorised by the Lagos State Police Command due to an alleged baby theft.
The officer's dismissal was accepted on Thursday to clear the way for his prosecution, the command's spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin said in a statement announcing it on his verified Twitter account.
He said that CP Idowu Owohunwa, the state's chief of police, reaffirmed his unflinching commitment to policing Lagos in accordance with the laws of decency and respect for human life.
Remember that Fortune Obhafuoso, a 35-year-old lady, accused Ukpabio, a member of the Panti Division, of conspiring with others to abduct her newborn child.
The mother of three who is a single parent claimed that Ukpabio detained her and forced her to submit a statement accusing her of trying to sell the kid for N3 million.
A day after giving birth, Obhafuoso alleged that Ukpabio forcibly removed her newborn child and handed him to an unnamed woman.
She claimed Ukpabio paid her N185,000 and warned her to never return for the child again under pain of arrest and the loss of her other two children.
She eventually reported the assault to Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, a rights campaigner, who asked security personnel to investigate.
