Police free #EndSARS anniversary protesters
The demonstrators detained during the celebration of the fourth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests have been freed by the Lagos State Police Command.
After being apprehended at the Lekki Toll Gate, the demonstrators, who were all above 18, were taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti, which is located in the Yaba neighbourhood of Lagos.
Olanrewaju Ishola, the State Commissioner of Police, was also on hand at the SCID to ensure their release.
In a tweet on Sunday, the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, tweeted via his X handle that the protesters had been released, saying, “All protesters in our custody have been released. CP Olanrewaju Ishola was on the ground at the SCID to personally see to that.”
The nationwide #EndSARS protests, which took place between October 1 and October 20, 2020, were a reaction to the police violence that residents had to endure, which was said to have resulted in multiple fatalities.
Some young people who gathered at the toll gate on Sunday to commemorate the day were rounded up by the police and given tear gas.
Hassan Soweto, the National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign, was among those detained, according to Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, and Omole Ibukun, the Initiator of the Creative Change Centre, who were reached by one of our journalists.
