Police raid Alaba shanties, set them on fire

The famed Alaba International Market in the state's Ojo Local Government Area was the target of a police raid on Friday, according to the Lagos State Police Command.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, made this announcement on Twitter.

He claimed that after the operation, some suspected criminals were detained and firearms were found on them.

Hundeyin added that the shanties were thereafter set on fire by the police officers.

He wrote, “This is a false narrative! Acting on credible information, police officers from Ojo Division raided shanties around the market, arrested suspected criminals and recovered some weapons. The shanties were thereafter set on fire. Alaba Int’l Market is not on fire.”

PUNCH After a fire destroyed three shanties near the market, Metro reported that there was fear in the neighbourhood.

Additionally, it was discovered that some market vendors used self-help to douse the flames before rescue personnel arrived.

No stores in the market were impacted, according to a statement from Margaret Adeseye, director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

She said, “It is instructive to confirm that shanties and not shops are on fire, please.”

She added that because agency representatives couldn't enter the area to perform their tasks, the incident turned into a security issue.

Adeseye stated that the organization was working with security personnel to resolve the problem.
