Report says 42, 954 Tanzanian schoolgirls drop out of school due to pregnancy

Between July 2021 and June 2022, a total of 42,954 schoolgirls discontinued their studies due to pregnancy.

This is in accordance with the most recent report released on Monday by Tanzania's Controller and Auditor General (CAG).

The 2021 to 2022 CAG report submitted in parliament in the capital Dodoma claimed out of the 42,954 impregnated schoolgirls, 23,009 were from secondary schools and 19,945 were from basic schools.

The survey revealed that impregnated secondary schoolgirls represented 28 per cent of 82,236 girls that were slated to complete their ordinary-level schooling in 2021.

The report said the impregnated schoolgirls were from 19 local government administrations around the country.

According to the research, the secondary schools that had the largest number of impregnated schoolgirls were in Kinondoni municipality in Dar es Salaam area with 4,652 females.

This the report claimed followed by the Newala district council in the Mtwara area with 3,783 females and the Misungwi district council in the Mwanza region with 2,570 girls.

For the primary schools, Kwimba district council in the Mwanza region had the greatest number of impregnated schoolgirls during the time under review with 9,045 girls, followed by Uvinza district council in the Kigoma region with 2,172 girls, said the report.
