Residents in Ajegunle, Lagos pay N50 to access healthcare
According to Dr. Kunle Megbuwawon, Chief Project Officer of Orange Health Initiative, hundreds of people in Ajegunle, a suburb in Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, pay N50 every day to receive healthcare.
This was revealed by Megbuwawon during a speech about the health intervention programme the initiative ran three years ago to enhance the lives of those residing in Ajegunle communities.
He bemoaned the poor health of the locals in his report, citing diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and hypertension as the most common illnesses.
He claimed that the unclean environment is to responsible for the spread of infectious diseases because it creates stagnant water, which draws large mosquitoes.
“Then chronic diseases because of stress and eating habits, we are consuming a lot of salt; people are having hypertension, diabetics,” he added.
He claimed that some Ajegunle inhabitants cannot afford to pay for healthcare or even prescription drugs due to the nation's economic circumstances, which is why a microhealth insurance programme is necessary.
