Rivers Attorney General Justice, Prof. Zacheaus Adangor resigns

Prof. Zacheaus Adangor, the Commissioner for Justice and State Attorney General of Rivers, has resigned.

Governor Sim Fubara received a letter from him on November 14, 2023, announcing his resignation.

He stated that his decision to leave the office was motivated by personal values.

“I hereby give Your Excellency Notice of my resignation as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State with effect from the date of this letter

“For the avoidance of doubt, my resignation from the said office is based on personal principles

“I wish to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity and privilege granted me to serve in your administration as a member of the cabinet. My Family and I are indebted to Your Excellency in gratitude,” the letter read in part.

Adangor was reappointed by Fubara as a member of the cabinet of former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

Early on in the state's crisis, there were rumours that the governor had fired the former Attorney General, who was thought to be an ally of the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.  But that was refuted by the state administration.

According to The PUNCH, the state government's demolition of the state legislative chamber early on Wednesday gave the Rivers State crisis a new dimension.

In a statement on Wednesday, the state's commissioner of information and communications, Joseph Johnson, justified the demolition by claiming that the location was dangerous for human habitation due to a recent explosion and fire incident.

The chamber was being demolished when four state legislators who supported Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of the state, gathered in a plenary session at Government House, Port Harcourt, under the direction of Speaker Edison Ehie, a factional leader.

After being elected on the Peoples Democratic Party platform, 27 members of the House switched to the All Progressives Congress on Monday, threatening to veto any requests for approval from the governor.

The lawmakers claimed in their letters to the factional Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, which were read aloud on Monday on the House floor, that they defected due to party division over the competition for the National Secretary post.
