Rivers United qualify for CAFCC quaterfinals
Despite a 2-2 home tie on Sunday, Port Harcourt's Rivers United managed to advance to the 2022/2023 CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinals.
At the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Nigeria Professional Football League champions and Congo Brazzaville's Diables Noirs drew their Group B Match Day 5 match.
As a result, they now have 10 points and can maintain their lead over the ASEC Mimosas, who are in second place and have the same number of points, by virtue of goals differential.
With five points and third place in the group, Diables Noirs' prospects of qualifying rested on Ivorian team ASEC losing to DC Motema Pembe.
According to The News Agency of Nigeria, Rivers United had to overcome a 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead before giving up an equalizer with nine minutes remaining in the game.
Diables Noirs took the lead, which they kept until halftime, when Emmanuel Ampiah put the ball in his own net.
Nwangwa Nyima scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half to give Rivers United the lead.
But with nine seconds left, Deo Bassinga gave Diables Noirs the lead again.
As a result of their 2-1 victory over Motema Pembe, visiting ASEC Mimosas improved their standing and advanced to the last gameday, April 2, when they will host Rivers United.
For ASEC, Aubin Kramo scored twice, including the winning goal in overtime.
After 27 minutes, he had put the visitors ahead, but Mydo Yallet's goal for the home team in the 51st minute tied the score.
Despite the pressure, ASEC persevered and scored the winning goal just before the end of the game.
According to NAN, the Nigerian team simply needs a draw in the encounter between ASEC and Rivers United on match day six to determine which team won the group.
