Robbers attack Hausa businessman, fled with $11m
At the Oke-Sokori of Abeokuta, in the Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun State, a four-man armed robbery gang successfully fled with a staggering amount of $11 million on Friday afternoon.
The three-minute heist was carried out by the four-man robbery group, who were all dressed in black T-shirts and jeans with black facemasks.
However, after disabling the automobile of their victim, a Hausa merchant who was travelling in a Toyota Venza salon car with the license plate (ABUJA) ABC 565 GN, the suspects drove away from the scene with the targeted money, packed in two "Ghana-Must-Go" bags.
Eyewitnesses who were on the scene of the robbery reported that the suspects, who drove a tinted Toyota Camry 'Muscle', had stopped their victim's Toyota Venza car in front of the FATGBEMS Petroleum Filling Station at Oke-Sokori at around 4:35 p.m. on Friday afternoon, forced it to stop, and then forced the boot open.
The suspects broke into the victim's car, removed the two bags holding the foreign currency, placed them into their vehicle, and then fled before security personnel could arrive.
The victim described his adventure to the two police patrol teams that arrived at the area shortly after the robbery occurred, around 30 minutes later. He stated he was returning to his base following a failed banking effort where he had gone to deposit the foreign currency.
The Hausa trader from Abeokuta said to the police patrol team that he had attempted to deposit the money at the Oke-Ilewo branch of a new generation bank earlier but had been turned away since the banking hours had passed.
However, the robbers attacked as the trader was heading back to his base.
The command's Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the occurrence and stated that command agents were already on the trail of the culprits.
