Russia and Turkey strike deal over partial gas supplies
Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed that Turkey will pay Russia in rubles for partial gas supplies.
The two countries held a bilateral discussion on Friday that lasted for more than four hours in Sochi.
After the meeting, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters that "the presidents agreed that they would start paying in rubles for partial gas shipments" throughout the negotiation process.
He added that the talks were only in the preliminary stages and that some of the supplies would be paid for in Russian rubles.
The discussions, according to the deputy prime minister, will open up new possibilities, including the advancement of monetary and financial links between Russia and Turkey.
The establishment of the financial banking bloc "to enable commercial businesses, Russian nationals, to pay during tourist excursions and exchange money," according to Novak, was another agreement struck by the two presidents.
The next meeting of the Russian-Turkish High-Level Cooperation Council will take place in Turkey, the two leaders decided.
