Sanwo-Olu approves release of 43 inmates in Lagos prisons

In an effort to lessen overcrowding and enhance the legal system, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorized the release of forty-three prisoners from correctional facilities throughout the state.

Lawal Pedro (SAN), the state's Attorney General and Commissioner for legal, made the announcement and stated that the action is a part of continuous changes in the legal system.

Pedro clarified that the governor's constitutional authority was used to carry out the release.

“The decision to release inmates… was taken pursuant to the power of prerogative of mercy,” he said.

"Those released were carefully chosen," he continued.

“The released inmates were duly recommended by the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy,” he said, noting that proper legal steps were followed.

According to the commissioner, the measure demonstrates the government's dedication to justice and improved jail conditions.

He continued, "This exercise reflects the State Government's unwavering commitment to upholding justice... and addressing overcrowding."

Additionally, he connected the action to initiatives to expedite judicial proceedings, claiming it would facilitate the transportation of prisoners to and from courts.

Pedro disclosed that the state has taken further actions, such as modernizing jail facilities and supplying buses for the transportation of prisoners.

He remarked that the government is still working on reform, as seen by the release of 91 prisoners in December 2025.

According to the Lagos government, it is still dedicated to striking a balance between victim justice, public safety, and criminal rehabilitation.
