Sanwo-Olu halts RTEAN operation in Lagos

The Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria's operations in Lagos State have been put on hold by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sola Giwa, the special adviser to the governor on transportation, informed the public of this on Thursday.

Following certain pockets of violence that were reported in Ojo and Lagos Island on Wednesday, he remarked that the suspension had become necessary and announced the formation of a 35-man caretaker committee to oversee the union's operations moving forward.

“In a bid to fulfill one of the cardinal objectives of the T.H.E.M.E.S developmental agenda of the present administration in Lagos State as it relates to Security and Good Governance, under Traffic Management and Transportation, the Lagos State Government has suspended all activities of RTEAN with immediate effect,” Giwa said.

According to the PUNCH, on WedneIday, two people were reportedly slain during an altercation with RTEAN factional members in the Lagos State communities of Iyana Iba and Lagos Island.

In a popular video clip from the clash on Wednesday, members of the transport union could be seen indulging in a free-for-all.

The transport union workers were seen fighting amongst themselves with stones, bottles, cutlasses, and other potentially lethal weapons in the video clip that Goldmine TV released on Instagram.
