Scaffolding collapse at construction site leaves 3 dead near Uptown Charlotte

At a construction site close to Uptown Charlotte and Dilworth on Monday morning, scaffolding collapsed, killing three construction workers after they fell roughly 70 feet, according to MEDIC and Charlotte Fire.

Just after nine in the morning, Charlotte Fire posted on social media that it was responding to an "industrial accident" at a construction site in the 700 block of East Morehead Street, near Euclid Avenue. In a later statement, CFD called the incident "a scaffolding collapse."

Three fatalities were confirmed by MEDIC, and CFD Captain Jackie Gilmore stated at a press conference that all three passed away at the scene.

Two additional construction workers were rescued by firefighters and were taken to a hospital with “minor injuries,” Gilmore said.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration will collaborate with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police on the inquiry, according to Gilmore, who also stated that all work at the construction site has been suspended.

According to news partner WSOC, OSHA representatives arrived at the scene on Monday just before noon.

The state Department of Labor's statistics show that there were 64 workplace fatalities in North Carolina during the fiscal year that ended in September 2022. This was less than the 92 in the fiscal year 2021 and the 80 in the fiscal year 2020.
