Senate reviews, passes student loan bill
The Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024 has been approved by the Senate.
This follows the Senate's review of the Bill's report from the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.
During plenary, Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC – Katsina South), the committee chairman, delivered the report.
Remember that the National Assembly received the Bill last week from President Bola Tinubu for review and approval.
By suspending pertinent parts of its standing rules, the Senate had granted the bill an expedited hearing and referred it to the Committee of the Whole for review.
Following the bill's debate, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred it to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND so that they may continue working on the legislation and provide a report in a week.
Through interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, which was established under the Act to offer education for all Nigerians, the Bill aims to make higher education easily accessible to impoverished Nigerians.
