Severe turbulence on United Airlines flight travelling into Houston leaves five injured

At least five passengers were hospitalized as a result of turbulence on a United Airlines flight landing in Houston early on Monday, according to an email from airport authorities to CNN.

According to CNN's public information officer Augusto Bernal, United Airlines flight 128 arrived at George Bush Intercontinental Airport around 5:30 a.m. local time after departing from Rio de Janeiro.

"The flight experienced severe turbulence that resulted in five passengers being transported to the hospital once it landed in Houston," Bernal said.

The turbulence, according to the airline, was unanticipated.

"United flight 128 encountered unexpected turbulence while en route to Houston. Upon arrival, two passengers and three crew members were met by medical personnel and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries," the statement said.

"We're grateful to our crew for their efforts to ensure the safety of our employees and customers."

The United flight comes a day after severe turbulence on a Hawaiian Airlines flight led to dozens of injuries.

The Hawaiian Airlines flight suffered from extreme turbulence, which resulted in dozens of injuries, the day before the United flight.

According to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, at least 36 passengers on Hawaiian Airlines Flight 35 were hurt on Sunday, and 20 of them were taken to hospital emergency rooms.

Before arriving in Honolulu, the aircraft spent 30 minutes in the choppy air.
