Shuaibu's residence security post demolished
On Sunday, public works volunteers and officials from the Edo State State Network demolished the security stand in front of Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor of Benin's Government Reservation Area.
The Edo State House of Assembly impeached Shaibu last Monday on charges of perjury and disclosing state secrets.
This came after Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the state's chief judge, reviewed the report of a seven-member panel. Marvellous Omobayo had taken the deputy governor's job after he was impeached, according to Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Since then, Shaibu has denounced his impeachment and petitioned the court to stop the proceedings, claiming that he is being persecuted merely for wishing to succeed his boss and exercising his fundamental human rights.
The story took a fresh turn on Sunday when the security post that was part of the golf course's barrier was taken down.
Before and after work, the post acted as a makeshift home or initial point of contact for Shaibu's security personnel.
In response to the destruction, a senior official from one of the organisations that conducted the exercise—who asked to remain anonymous—stated that the security post was taken down because the former deputy governor had lost this privilege as a private citizen and was no longer eligible for it.
The ministry that was blamed for the demolition, the state Commissioner for Roads and Bridges, Eta Uzamere, claimed the exercise had nothing to do with the ministry.
He said, “I have seen some online reports linking my ministry to the demolition of the former deputy governor’s security and I can tell you it had nothing to do with my ministry.”
