Six vigilantes dead from Plateau attack
In an attack on Tuesday night in Sambak, a hamlet in Riyom Local Government in Plateau State, at least six members of a vigilante group were killed.
Ishaku Sabastine, a spokesman for the 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, confirmed the incident on Wednesday.
“It was a diversionary attack because the information we got earlier was that the criminals were going to attack Tashek and Wereng to rustle cows (in Riyom); six lives were lost in Riyom.â€
While narrating how the vigilantes were killed, the Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Movement (BYM), Rwang Tengwong, told journalists that “the victims who were on surveillance were “suddenly waylaid by the gunmen. The gunmen first shot two of the vigilantes. So, when four of their colleagues went to evacuate them, they were also gunned down. This brings the total to six.â€
The assault on Tuesday was a continuation of the state's rural communities and herders engaging in retaliatory strikes.
According to reports, 22 individuals died on Monday in the Barikin Ladi LGA.
The state's police command's spokesperson, who verified Monday's night attack, urged the populace to always call the police with any emergency information, stating that doing so would aid security in swiftly resolving the issue.
Caleb Mutfuwang, the governor of the state, has denounced the most recent attacks and vowed that the administration will take all necessary measures to stop the situation while urging everyone in the state to maintain calm.
Musa Haladu, the Zone 4 assistant inspector general of police, visited the state and promised to assess the security situation as well as to cooperate with the security authorities to maintain calm.
