Sixteen detained for allegedly defrauding Interswitch

At least sixteen people have been detained by the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre on suspicion of financial fraud against Interswitch Limited, a well-known digital commerce platform in Africa.

Thus far, N3.9 billion in cash and valuables have been retrieved from the suspects, and there is still work to be done.

The spokesperson for the Department of State Services, Peter Afunanya, read out the police's accomplishments at the joint press conference of the Strategic Communications Interagency Policy Committee on Monday in Abuja.

He said that the centre made the arrest and recovery in response to a petition from Interswitch Limited about an issue with its financial portal. Eight of the suspects, he said, had been found guilty.

Afunanya said, “ The Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre tackled a massive financial fraud case, acting on a petition from Interswitch Limited regarding a glitch on its financial portal.

“The swift response led to the arrest of over 16 suspects, eight of whom have been convicted. The operation recovered over N3.9bn in cash, properties, and vehicles, with ongoing efforts to recover additional looted funds.”
