Street fighter 6 to come with cross play and rollback netcode
It looks like Street Fighter 6 will have cross play and rollback netcode, two highly requested features for fighting games. There are only two words you need to use to get a fighting game fan's blood pumping: rollback netcode. And thanks to GameSpot's Tamoor Hussain, we now know that the latest entry in the Street Fighter series will feature it. Celebrity fighting game player Maximilian Dood was also able to confirm that Street Fighter 6 will have cross play, another huge win for fighting game fans.
Netcode's rollback may need some explaining for those outside of the FGC community. Essentially, it's a technique to bypass lag where your input is predicted by the game while playing online so there is no input lag. And the same goes for your opponent, since both ends are treated like a computer and not another player. This may sound strange, but for the most part, the computer is very accurate in predicting the move you are going to use. The purpose of this is to make it as close to local play as possible, since fighting games are massively about accurate inputs and metrics. The combination of rollback netcode and cross play means players on any platform can play together without much trouble. Since both are fairly commonly requested features for older fighting games that don't have them.
Thankfully, Street Fighter 6 is shaping up to be an incredibly strong sequel, as our very own Alex Donaldson got to practice with a very early preview. So far it looks like SF6 has learned a lot from the mistakes of its predecessor, Street Fighter 5. As well as other lessons from other, newer fighting games. While seemingly the entire roster has been leaked online, Summer Games Fest has treated us to a formal reveal of Guile, one of Street Fighter's most classic characters.
