Sunday Igboho released from Benin after two years

The Beninese government has released Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, a leader of the Yoruba nation.

The agitator said on Sunday that he was now legally free to go to Nigeria and other nations from Cotonou, the capital of the Benin Republic.

“I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world. I have fulfilled all the legal conditions attached to my bail a few years back and I am coming home to Nigeria, my country of origin, any moment from now.

“I can confirm to you that I am now free to come back to Nigeria. There is no legal encumbrance again. Even though I have been living in Cotonou for some time, I can confirm to you categorically that I have now secured the liberty to leave Cotonou for Nigeria,” Adeyemo told the Nigerian Tribune on Sunday.

After a two-year trial by the Beninese government, he was allowed to leave again.

The PUNCH claims that when Adeyemo proclaimed the Yoruba Nation's sovereignty in March 2021, he ignited a hornet's nest.

In addition to urging Yoruba in Hausa/Fulani or Igbo territory to return home, he launched a campaign to drive killer herdsmen and kidnappers out of the South-West states.

However, he left Nigeria in July 2021 when Department of State Services agents broke into his home in Ibadan at night.

At least one person died as a result of the attack, and some of his possessions were damaged.

The DSS asserted that during the raid on his flat, seven AK-47 rifles, pump-action guns, 5,000 rounds of ammunition, charms, and other weapons were found.

Later, in August 2022, the Court of Appeal overturned the judgement.

He later tried to leave for Germany but was stopped at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

He was not returned to Nigeria by the Federal Government, which was commanded by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
