Supreme Court ousts Ogun monarch
Oba Olatunji Kalejaiye's ouster as Nloku of Iraye in Remo North Local Government Area, Ogun State, has been upheld by the Supreme Court in Abuja.
An earlier judgement from the Appeal Court requesting that Kalejaiye cease posing as the Nloku of Iraye was upheld by the Apex court's ruling.
The Apex Court approved the application to strike out Kalejaiye's appeal for lack of diligent prosecution, as asked, in the Supreme Court decision delivered by Justice Uwani Musa Aba Aji.
“Appeal number SC/CV11112022 is at this moment struck out for lack of diligent prosecution,”’ the Supreme Court ruled to end the embattled monarch’s troubled reign as Nloku of Iraye.
Alongside Justice Musa on the case were Justices Habeeb Adewale Abiru, M.M. Saulawa, Obande Festus Ogbuinya, and Chioma Egondu Nwosu-Iheme.
When the Court of Appeal in Ibadan, Oyo State, rendered a decision in September 2022, it put an end to the reign of Oba Kalejaiye, the deposed Nloku of Iraye, in the case of Kalejaiye's appeal against his 2015 deposition by a State High Court in Sagamu (Appeal No: CA/1B/255/2015 Suit No: HCS/65/2019).
The Justices of the Appeal Court, led by Hon. Justice Moore A. A. Adumein, ruled that “the appeal lacked merit and is hereby dismissed. The Judgment of Hon. Justice Olugbenga Ogunfowora is hereby affirmed.”
The leader of the Sugbada royal family, Pa Olu Salau, spoke on the Supreme Court's ruling and thanked the Justices for their clever, thorough, and incisive handling of the case. He called on all sides of the argument to acknowledge the ruling as God's will and the desires of the decent people of Iraye.
