Supreme Court affirms Fubara as Rivers State governor
On Thursday, the Supreme Court affirmed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara's election.
In a unanimous ruling, the five-member panel of the court dismissed the appeal that was submitted to contest Mr. Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) victory in the election on March 18, 2023. Tonye Cole, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for governor, filed the appeal that was denied.
The appeal was deemed without merit by the judicial panel headed by Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
The court found that it had no reason to interfere with the concurrent rulings of the Court of Appeal and the Rivers State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, which had both upheld Governor Fubara's election. The lead judgement was delivered by panellist Ibrahim Saulawa.
The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal on Thursday, ruling that Mr. Cole had not provided sufficient evidence to support his claim that the election was not held in accordance with the Electoral Act of 2022.
