Supreme Court affirms Nasir Idris as Kebbi governor

The election of Nasir Idris as governor of Kebbi State has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The state election was deemed inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission due to ballot cancellation and excessive voting in certain Local Government Areas.

The All Progressives Congress candidate, Idris, defeated Peoples Democratic Party opponent, Aminu Bande, with 409,225 votes, in a supplementary election held by the electoral commission on April 15. Bande received 360,940 votes.

Dissatisfied with the election results, Bande went to the tribunal.

He claimed that Idris was unfit to run for office and that there had been over voting in several polling places.

The tribunal took 1,735 votes away from the APC and more than 900 votes away from the PDP's total.

But the election of Idris was unaffected by the subtraction.

Bande appealed the decision to the court of appeals because he was unhappy with the ruling, but the court upheld the governor's election.

Bande pursued the case all the way to the highest court.

The appeal was denied when the court ruled that it lacked merit in its verdict.

In addition, further appeals in the case were also denied.
