Supreme Court nullifies National Lottery Act 2005
The National Lottery Act 2005, which was passed by the National Assembly, was declared invalid by the Supreme Court on Friday.
In a unanimous ruling, a seven-member court panel decided that the National Lottery Act of 2005 should no longer be applied in all states other than the Federal Capital Territory, where the National Assembly has the authority to enact legislation.
In its main ruling, Justice Mohammed Idris of the Supreme Court ruled that the National Assembly was not authorised to enact laws pertaining to lotteries and other games of chance.
The panel also included Justices Mohammed Garba, Emmanuel Agim, Simon Tsammani, Stephen Adah, Jamilu Tukur, and Uwani Abba-Aji, who served as the panel's presider.
The panel concluded that only the state Houses of Assembly had such authority, and that they have sole authority over lottery, games of chance, and other connected matters.
