Syria-Turkey earthquake leads to at least 4800 deaths
The double earthquake that shook border towns in Turkey and Syria claimed at least 4,800 lives.
On Tuesday morning, Orhan Tatar, a representative of Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), said that 3,381 people had died and 20,426 had been injured in the county. More than 5,700 buildings, according to Mr. Tatar, were also destroyed.
The Ministry of Health and the rescue group White Helmets estimate that 1,444 people have died and 3,500 have been injured in Syria.
Extreme weather has made things worse for both the earthquake victims and the rescuers.
According to Al Jazeera, Turkish President Recep Erdogan described Monday's twin earthquakes as the "worst calamity" since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake, which claimed around 33,000 lives.
While Syria has asked the UN for assistance, Assad also proclaimed seven days of national mourning.
Nigeria was among the nations that sent condolences to the deceased and pledged support to the disaster-stricken nations.
