Taliban police rescue woman confined in dark room for 25 years
The Taliban Interior Ministry announced on Thursday that a woman who had spent 25 years being held captive in a pitch-black room in the Afghan capital had been freed by police.Â
The woman was held in a room full of trash and debris, according to disturbing images released by the ministry, and was fed through a window.Â
“She feels unsafe and afraid whenever she sees other people,†ministry spokesman Abdul Matin Qani said as he described her ordeal.
The woman is now being treated in a Kabul hospital after suffering both mental and physical abuse.
“Malnourished, she has also become severely anaemic,†a doctor said.
Medical professionals found that her joints and bones were both worn.
She went through years of hardship after divorcing her first husband, and the police claim that she also struggled with infertility, her brothers' illegal behaviour, and a disagreement over an inheritance.
Four members of her family, including her brother and nephews, were detained.
According to police, the case is being thoroughly probed.
