Taye Atske Selassie sworn in as president of Ethiopia p
Taye Atske Selassie was unexpectedly voted president by Ethiopia's two houses of parliament yesterday.
Selassie followed Sahle-Work Zewde, the nation's first female head of state, who just two days prior made a hint about her departure in a social media post.
During a joint session of the House of Federation (upper house) and the House of Peoples' Representatives (lower house) in Addis Ababa, parliamentarians accepted Selassie's appointment.
He has vast experience in foreign affairs, having previously served as foreign minister and the country’s permanent representative to the UN.
Zewde, who had taken office in 2018 but faced criticism for her alleged inaction about the ongoing crises in several regions of Ethiopia, was replaced by Selassie. Over the weekend, she voiced her displeasure with some things on X, which many took to be a hint that she would be quitting.
