Ten dies as Malaysia military helicopters crash
Tuesday during a training session, two Malaysian military helicopters collided and crashed, killing all ten crew members, according to the nation's rescue agency.
“The two helicopters collided during flight training. All 10 victims on board have been confirmed dead by the medical officers,” Suhaimy Mohamad Suhail, senior operations commander from the fire and rescue department said.
A flypast practice in advance of the navy fleet's open day celebrations in May featured multiple helicopters flying low in a formation above the Lumut naval stadium, according to footage that was published online.
A second helicopter was observed to have its rear rotor clipped by one of the choppers, sending both into a spin and crashing.
According to the rescue organisation, the two helicopters involved were an AgustaWestland AW139 and a Eurocopter AS555SN Fennec. Images from the naval base stadium track showed the highly damaged Eurocopter model, assorted debris, and rescue workers surrounding it.
The naval base's swimming pool area is where the AgustaWestland helicopter crashed.
