Tetsuya Magami: Arrested for the murder of Shinzo Abe
Tetsuya Yamagami was identified, arrested and imprisoned as the killer of Shinzo Abe, Japan's longest-serving prime minister.
Yamagami, the 41-year-old killer, is an ex-military who had served for three years around 2005 in the Maritime Self-Defense Force, the equivalent of the country's navy.
The killer said he attacked the former Japanese prime minister because he was unhappy with him.
Yamagami was arrested Friday at Nara Nishi Police Station near the shooting site in western Japan's Nara region.
Yamagami was reportedly a resident of Nara and was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder for shooting at Abe.
Police also seized his gun, which was later revealed to have been locally made. He is charged with suspicion of attempted murder.
The suspect fired twice and media reports say Abe was shot in the chest. He was standing behind the politician, about 10 feet away, when he shot him.
According to the Japanese Nippon Hoso Kyokai (Japan Broadcasting Corporation) NHK, the shooter did not run away. He reportedly targeted Shinzo Abe with the intent to kill him.
An eyewitness told NHK that the gunman made no attempt to flee the scene. Instead, he put that gun on the ground and remained prone when security guards arrested him.
