Three Nigerians sentenced to prison for drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia regain freedom
Three Nigerian women who were detained and charged with drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia were later found not guilty and freed.
The federal ministry of foreign affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, said in a statement on Sunday that the women's release followed "long diplomatic and legal engagements" between Saudi officials and the Nigerian government.
While on pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, the three individuals—Hadiza Abba, Fatima Malah, and Fatima Gamboi—were detained on suspicion of possessing a substance believed to be cocaine.
They were detained for 10 months after being arrested and charged on March 5, 2024, at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Azeez International Airport in Madinah, Saudi Arabia, according to Ebienfa.
