Tinubu cancels Lagos events following casualties in Abuja, Anambra stampedes
In remembrance of the stampede deaths in Abuja and Okija, Anambra, President Bola Tinubu postponed all of his scheduled events in Lagos on Saturday, including his participation in the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta.
Numerous people were killed and injured in the two catastrophes. According to a statement from his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu was planning to see the boat procession and other events of the Boat Regatta from the waterfront of his Queen's Drive home in Ikoyi.
When the president postponed his visit after briefings on the tragedies, dignitaries, including chiefs from the state and high-ranking officials of the Lagos state government, were already seated.
Mr. Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims of the events in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory and encouraged states and pertinent authorities to implement stringent crowd control measures right now.
The occurrences at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, and a community centre in Okija, Anambra, he said, were extremely upsetting. According to Mr. Tinubu, the recent occurrence in Ibadan, Oyo state, was distressingly similar to the two tragic incidents.
According to him, state and municipal governments should no longer put up with businesses and organisations engaged in humanitarian and philanthropic endeavours operating with operational flaws. Mr. Tinubu wished the injured a speedy recovery while praying for the peaceful rest of the innocent Nigerians who perished in the stampede.
