Tinubu launches CNG buses in Abuja
At the State House in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu inaugurated thirty buses fuelled by compressed natural gas that were given by Depots and the Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday at the CNG bus launch, Tinubu stressed how critical it is that Nigeria exploit its abundant natural gas resources for the country's transportation system.
The President's declaration that Nigeria must adopt CNG for transportation represents a dramatic change in the nation's views on energy use and public transit.
“Utilising natural gas to power Nigeria’s transportation industry is the next way to go,” he stated.
The President cited foreign precedents in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelelae, pointing out that nations such as India have required compressed natural gas (CNG) for all commercial vehicles since 2004.
Tinubu said that commercial cars in Nigeria consume trillions of naira worth of fuel each month, making up almost 80% of the nation's total petrol consumption.
“The solution is here, we have it, and we will work on it,” Tinubu assured, promising that this shift would lead to better conditions and increased prosperity for Nigerians.
He emphasised that making the most of Nigeria's massive gas reserves may boost the country's energy competitiveness and result in revolutionary changes.
Anambra State-based Innoson Motors, a Nigerian automaker, created and produced the hybrid CNG buses.
In order to allay worries about a possible CNG scarcity, each bus has the capacity to carry up to 100 passengers and the option to run on diesel when necessary.
