Tinubu sacks Hajj Commission chairman Jalal Arabi
Professor Abdullahi Usman was appointed Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, thereby removing Jalal Arabi, who he had appointed in October.
Arabi was interrogated and imprisoned during the N90 billion Hajj subsidy investigation conducted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which resulted to Arabi's dismissal.
On Monday, Ajuri Ngelale, the President's Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, made the announcement of his departure in a statement. "President Tinubu appoints chairman of National Hajj Commission," according to the statement.
On August 16, the EFCC announced that it had arrested Arabi and Abdullahi Kontagora, the secretary of NAHCON, for unlawful withdrawal and purported manipulation of the N90 billion 2024 Hajj intervention fund.
Recovered from the head of the commission and other top officials was SR314,098 in total. The anti-graft agency claimed to have found evidence of Arabi's illicit overpayment of himself and others over the required operating costs out of the N90 billion Hajj subsidy.
