Tinubu's wife senator Oluremi launches elderly support scheme in Lagos

The Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS), designed to assist vulnerable senior citizens 65 years of age and older in all 36 states of the federation during this festive season, was introduced by First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday.

At the inaugural Renewed Hope Initiative Elders Support Scheme (RHIESS) event in Lagos, which took place at Lagos House in Ikeja, Tinubu stated that the programme, which had the theme "Better Days Ahead," is an economic empowerment initiative for the welfare of senior citizens throughout the nation.

On behalf of Senator Tinubu, the first lady of Lagos State, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, gave the beneficiaries the cash and gift items. She said that the gesture was a major step forward in the government's overall effort to create a society that is more compassionate and inclusive.

She stressed that N100,000 was given to over 250 beneficiaries who were chosen from each of the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

According to her, “the total sum disbursed is N950,000,000 as approved by the Governing Board of the Renewed Hope Initiative and each state of the federation received N25,000,000 which includes beneficiaries from Lagos State.

"We are committed to ensuring that each State benefits from this gesture without discrimination and this is to cushion the effect of the economic situation and to alleviate the burdens of our esteemed elders during this festive period,” she added.

She emphasised that veterans from the Defence and Police Officers' Wives Association (DEPOWA) would also benefit from this initiative, pointing out that the event is held simultaneously in all 36 states of the federation, as well as the Federal Capital Territory.
