Tornado hits Mississippi, death toll rises to 26
The number of fatalities and property losses from the deadly tornado that struck Mississippi on Friday has now reached 26.
According to CNN, dozens more people have suffered injuries as a result of Friday night's severe weather, which included at least one tornado.
Mississippi, where the damage and death toll have been most severe, is where the tornado was confirmed to have touched down. Teams for search and rescue are dispersed throughout the state.
According to PowerOutage.us, more than 28,000 households and businesses in Mississippi and Alabama are without electricity. Until utility personnel began making repairs, tens of thousands more people were without service.
The larger storm system is moving eastward and is expected to threaten the East Coast on Saturday night with strong gusts and a few isolated tornadoes.
In a tweet, US President Joseph Biden expressed his prayers for those who lost loved ones in the tragic tornadoes together with his wife Jill.
“Jill and I are praying for those who have lost loved ones in the devastating tornadoes in Mississippi and those whose loved ones are missing. I spoke with @tatereeves, @SenatorWicker, @SenHydeSmith, and @BennieGThompson to express my condolences and offer full federal support.
“I also spoke to @FEMA_Deanne, who has already deployed emergency response personnel and resources to support search-and-rescue and assess the damage.
“We will do everything we can to help. We will work together to deliver the support you need to recover, for as long as it takes,†Biden tweeted.
