Tribunal maintains Lawal as Zamfara governor, dismisses Matawalle's petition
The Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Dauda Lawal has been elected as the governor of Zamfara State, according to the Zamfara State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
The All Progressives Congress, or APC, candidate for governor, Bello Matawalle, filed a case challenging Lawal's victory, but the tribunal dismissed it for lack of substance.
As a result, it granted Matawalle, the petitioner, a N500,000 cost.
The verdict was reached unanimously by the panel's three judges, Justices Cordelia Ogadi, Bello Hassan, and Aliyu Gegele.
Justice Cordelia Ogadi, the three-person panel's chairman, read the verdict of the tribunal, which took more than four hours.
The petitioner's claims that the election was not held in several State wards and that the results were improperly combined were not proven, the panel ruled.
The tribunal determined that Matawalle could not prove his complaint regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) alleged violation of the Electoral Act and the corrupt manner in which the election was conducted.
