Twitter implements $8 per month fee for blue tick
In some nations, Twitter will start charging $8 for the coveted blue check verification marks after updating its app in the Apple App Store.
The change was made on Saturday, November 5 and is Elon Musk's first significant update to the social networking site.
The modification occurs one week after Musk acquired control of Twitter in a $44 billion deal.
The multi-billionaire entrepreneur promised to start charging customers for blue ticks while also laying off half of Twitter's workers.
Those who "join up now" for $7.99 a month can have the blue checkmark next to their user names, per Twitter, "exactly like the celebrities, businesses, and politicians you already follow," according to an update for Apple iOS devices.
Blue ticks next to a user's name before Musk took over suggested Twitter had verified that the account belonged to the person or business claiming it.
Beyond demanding a charge, Twitter's plans to confirm the user's identity were not immediately evident.
The iOS notification lists "half the advertisements," the option to submit lengthier videos to Twitter, and priority ranking for great material as other advantages of the update.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by Twitter or Musk.
The improvements were announced by Twitter's new CEO earlier this week as part of his efforts to monetise the social media platform and reduce its reliance on adverts.
According to a Twitter update, countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom would be allowed to use the new service with verification.
