Two Chinese, two others killed in attack on DRC gold convoy
In the lawless east of the Republic of Congo, an attack on a convoy carrying gold left two Chinese nationals and two other people dead, local police reported on Saturday.
The TSM Mining convoy of four vehicles was ambushed on Friday as it was transporting gold from a location near the Kimbi River in the Fizi district of South Kivu province.
The attackers "stole parcels of gold which they took away into the bush," according to Sammy Kalondji, the chief local administrator in Fizi.
A driver and a Congolese soldier were the other two fatalities.
Three other people, including a Chinese mine worker and two locals—a soldier and a mine worker—were hurt in the incident, according to Kalondji.
The attackers, according to him, were residents from the nearby Maniema region.
The Asian power dominates the lucrative mineral mining sector in the DRC, where China is a significant investor.
There have been conflicts and bloodshed between locals and Chinese mining companies in South Kivu, which has been the scene of multiple attacks carried out by armed groups and militias.
