UNILAG lecturers commences strike over salaries

In protest of what they called "amputated" pay for January and February 2026, lecturers at the University of Lagos withdrew their services on Wednesday.

Prof. Idou Keinde, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG chapter, stated that academics in a congress on Tuesday decided to keep quitting because the university has not carried out the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU agreement that went into force on January 1, 2026.

Keinde said, “We are withdrawing our services from tomorrow (Wednesday) morning until our salaries are fully paid.”

“The Federal Government and ASUU signed an agreement effective January 1, and our salaries have not been complete since then, with the UNILAG administration paying amputated January and February 2026 salaries.”

The Federal Government granted a 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance for ASUU members and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance for research under the terms of the agreement agreed on January 14, 2026, which went into effect on January 1.

With the apparent expectation that funds will be reimbursed from the 2026 budget, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, had asked universities to make use of existing resources to ensure fast payment.

Keinde attributed the deadlock to certain universities' inability to comply with the directive.
