US imposes visa restrictions on Ugandan officials after anti-LGBTQI law
A ban on Ugandan officials was declared by the US government on Friday, citing corruption and violations of human rights.
The Immigration and Nationality Act's Section 212(a)(3)(C) may be used to impose visa limits, according to the Department of State.
The administration of Joe Biden stated that the US government will keep reviewing new policy-related activities.
The accused are charged with participating in or causing corruption, undermining democracy, and violating human rights, especially those of LGBTQI+ people.
The Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 of Uganda, which was passed in late May, mandates prosecution and either life in jail or the death penalty for anybody who identifies as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or as asexual.
The Department of State has also changed its advice for Americans travelling abroad to emphasize the dangers associated with LGBTQI+ people or those who are considered to be LGBTQI+.
The U.S. assures “strong support†for Ugandans, expressing commitment “to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and globally.â€
