US says helicopter raid kills two ISIS officials in Syria
U.S. Central Command reported that two members of the Islamic State terrorist organization were killed in Syria early on Sunday morning local time by an American helicopter attack.
According to a statement from Central Command, often known as CENTCOM, among those slain was Anas, a provincial administrator in eastern Syria who was involved in the group's planning and facilitation operations.
According to CENTCOM, it doesn't appear that the raid injured or killed any civilians.
"ISIS continues to represent a threat to the security and stability of the region. This operation reaffirms CENTCOM's steadfast commitment to ensuring the group's enduring defeat," said Joe Buccino, a CENTCOM spokesperson.
"The death of these ISIS officials will disrupt the terrorist organization's ability to further plot and carry out destabilizing attacks in the Middle East," Buccino said.
The Islamic State group lost its self-declared caliphate, which spanned portions of Iraq and Syria, around 2017. It is now a shell of what it once was.
The radicals, who have thousands of militants dispersed across affiliates in Africa, the Middle East, central Asia, and elsewhere, are still considered a threat, according to U.S. officials.
After the deaths of the first three Islamic State commanders, the fourth, Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Qurashi, assumed control of the organization last month.
