US to send official delegation to 2022 World Cup in Qatar

During the week, Karine Jean-Pierre, the press secretary for the White House, revealed that the United States would send a delegation to the 2022 World Cup, which will begin in Qatar next month.

Human rights organisations are paying closer attention to the tournament, which is set to start on November 20, due to claims that the countries hosting it exploited migrant labour while building stadium infrastructure. However, even detractors have admitted that there have been improvements and changes.

“This event is about our Team USA, again, a special event, and we’re going to cheer them on,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said of the World Cup.

Jean-Pierre wouldn’t specify who would attend the tournament from the U.S., saying, “We’re still determining who will lead and join an official U.S. delegation to the World Cup.”

When asked if the White House was thinking about not sending a delegation in an effort to send a message to the Qataris about their alleged mistreatment of migrants, Jean-Pierre said that it wasn't on the table.

"This is an important event, and we’re going to be cheering on the team, Team USA. It is not an unusual thing for us to do when there is an event like this,” the press secretary added.
